During the 11 years of brutal and inhuman civil conflict ever in the history of the world, Sierra Leoneans experienced the most cruelty and barbarism at the hands of ruthless fighters (as presented in Blood Diamond). The country degenerated into a conflict zone trademarked by the hacking of limbs of innocent civilians including women and children; burrning of civilian homes and other atrocities. Every Sierra Leonean in the diaspora became concerned as the livelihood of loved ones back in Sierra Leone were dependent on financial remittances and soothing words from the diaspora. The natives of Kenema district resident in the United States were not an exception.

On May 13th, 2001, a group of five natives of Kenema district converged at the Sierra Leone embassy in Washington DC to launch the Kenema Association. Since that time, the organization has embarked on tremendous humanitarian efforts and projects with the objective of helping to return the district to normal life. The organization is registered in the United States of America with a 501(C)3 status (Non-Profit status); and in Sierra Leone it is registered with the government as an international non-governmental organization (NGO status). The organization has offices established in both the USA and Sierra Leone. The Sierra Leone office is located in Kenema town on 29 Duawo Street with a project coordinator on salary to coordinate the objectives of the organization.
