Educational Materials (Ongoing)
One of the many projects we are working on is to equip functioning schools and libraries throughout the district with books and other educational materials. A 40-foot container of books and other educational materials has arrived in Kenema town. The books have now been distributed to the schools, libraries and the highest educational institution in the east of Sierra Leone -The Estern Polytechnic. Letters of appreciation have been received by KDA from various schools in Kenema district. Receipt Letters.
Computer Drive (In Progress)
This involves the collection of new and used computers here in the United States to supply to all functioning high schools and especially the Eastern Polytechnic which now teaches Information Technology as a course. A percentage of the items collected will be used to establish the SLKDDM Computer Literacy Training Center for Teachers located at the SLKDDM office in Kenema Town.
Project Development (In Progress)
In coordination with the project coordinator in Sierra Leone, SLKDDM is simultaneously embarking on the development and presentation of grant and project proposals to donor agencies in request for funding to implement development projects in Kenema district. A special task is now assigned to carrying out the project plans.
Honoring Heroes (Completed)
We realized that part of what contributes to citizens valuing the significance of their culture is by honoring and celebrating heroes who had provided significant services to their community. We have been challenged to construct the "Heroes Triangle" in Kenema town where prominent people like Salia Koroma (pictured left), a very popular accordionist in Sierra Leone whose poetic lyrics were/and are still very educative; and Dr. Alpha Lavalie who started the 'Kamajor' uprising against the RUF rebels during the civil conflict. That Kamajor group later transformed into a civil defense force (CDF) which, to a very large extent is believed to have contributed quite a lot to bringing the 11 years of civil conflict to an end.
Community Center (In Progress)
Our long term objective is to construct a multi-complex building in Kenema town as a start where people can gather to celebrate events, perform ceremonies and discuss vital district issues. The need for a functional and well equipped multi-complex building cannot be overemphasized. The need has been enormous as there is none in the entire district.
Subsequent projects will follow as current projects are successfully implemented.
